Ntuthuko Shezi | Founder and Managing Director at Scratch Mobile
Ntuthuko Shezi is the Founder and Managing Director at Scratch Mobile, whose passion for business stemmed from a desire to change his family’s financial situation. He used the lessons he learned and the experiences he gained in starting his first business designing and printing T-shirts to apply for bursaries to finance his studies in Electro-Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. Ntuthuko Shezi saw a gap in the panel beating industry after being in a car accident, which he turned into business opportunity. Scratch mobile is also the first known business of its kind in the world, an auto-body repair service situated at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa, that sees to your car while you are flying.
My Definition Of Success | Success in my context means proving it can be done. I have previously ranked the monetary rewards of success highly. With time I have embraced that I am laying the groundwork for future generations of African entrepreneurs to get into traditional industry and compete in SA and beyond.
I Am Driven By | The desire to fulfill God’s purpose for my time on this earth.
My Highlights | When Scratch Mobile (Airport Auto Center) won the General Motors Best Speed shop category in 2013 and when I was selected to be a Washington Fellow to participate in the Young African Leaders Initiative in 2014
The Difference Between good And Great | Being great at what you do means making it easy for the next guy to do it with their eyes closed.
A Key Talent | The ability to see opportunity and decide whether it is worth pursuing. Every one’s path to success is different. The ability to know when to relent and when to detour is important. Over the years I have been able to think bigger, having paid my dues in the junior league.
The Characteristics Of Success | Valuing people, having an eye for detail has helped me navigate my journey so far.
Principles I Live By | If my actions were to be front page news I should still be able to sleep at night, else I must rethink.
Critical Skills I Develop | Communication skills are of utmost importance in being able to build a team around a vision. I am working on being able to rely more on data than my gut for making decisions.
How I Use My Mind | The mind is the horse, the body just the carriage. I fight with my mind daily to make it not fear anyone or anything. Then I can use my skills and experience as bits to dictate strategy and tactics.
Lessons I Have Learnt | Hire for passion and train for skill. Never stop training your staff. Trust in processes and less so in people.
Performing At My Peak | I make sure that I am happy at home. Without being happy at home all the hard work feels like a waste of time.
Resources I Use To Stay Inspired | I try to spend time with people I know are much smarter than I am. In this way I get free advice for a price of meal. I enjoy the TED talks as they always have some expert speaking on something useful at a touch of a button.
My Future Dreams And Ambitions | I want to run a venture capital fund that would make good ideas spread faster.
The Best Advice I’ve Received | People buy from people. I must always try to be a person before being a businessman
Advice On Building Wealth | One must be patient and persistent in order to prosper.
I Am Inspired By | In South African I am inspired by Desmond Mabuza of Signature Restaurant. Isaac and the late Benjamin Mophatlane are also great role models for me. Internationally, Elon Musk takes the cake.
The Legacy You Would Like To Leave | I would like to be remembered as a ground-breaker.
