Seth Rotherham | Founder and CEO of 2oceansvibe Media
Seth Rotherham launched 2oceansvibe.com in 2002 and started blogging, eventually winning over 15 Blog of Year awards. 2oceansvibe Radio launched in August 2010 and became the most successful digital/internet radio station in SA. On a more sartorial note, Seth was chosen as GQ Magazine’s Best Dressed Man of the year in 2010.
I Am Driven By | The eternal quest for everything to be automated – so that I can chill out more. Whether that requires more staff or robots, I will strive towards it.
My Highlights | Getting into the Met Bar exclusive members club in London in my early 20s – for 2 years – because I had the same name as a C-grade actor, who was a member, but nobody knew what he looked like. First night we had shooters with Michael Jordan as Boy George spun the decks. The place is half the size of Caprice. I delivered Kevin Spacey a line from The Usual Suspects the one night and taunted Marilyn Manson the other. Long story. That period was a highlight.
But back to grown-up life, highlights include: getting 2oceansvibe.com to half a million unique readers a month, launching SA’s first commercial online radio station in 2011, marrying my beautiful wife – Samantha, launching the goodvibescharity.com charity bracelet, and writing and publishing my first book, ‘Work is a sideline. Live the holiday..’ (sethbook.co.za). Lest we forget the pinnacle moment of being chosen as GQ’s Best Dressed Man Of The Year, 2010.
My One Key Talent | I think the big thing is actually going out and doing what you say you want to do. There’s nothing worse than someone saying “Hey, that was my idea!” – then why didn’t you do it? I’ve always given ideas a bash – to see what happens.
I never scored A’s at school in English for writing, because I was always trying to write like William Golding (we had ‘Lord of the Flies’ as a setwork, Piggy). But then I started 2oceansvibe, started enjoying whisky and weed (together) and started writing the way I speak – telling stories the way I tell them. And that was the draw for 2oceansvibe’s initial (ever-faithful) readers. The irreverent humour they identified with became the trend – with blogs becoming a ‘thing’ sometime after I started. But this is the thing.. I didn’t know I could write, but I gave it a shot. I suppose that is the ‘talent/strength’ behind what has created this success – the willing to follow through with ideas. There are lots of things I’ve tried that haven’t worked out – but you don’t know about them. That’s the point of my new book, actually. It gives step-by-step detailed instructions, showing what I do to test all of my online ideas – with minimal risk. The days of people having to shell out R10k – R20k to test an online product / service are over. You have no excuse not to give new ideas a try.
Principles I Live By | Integrity and karma.
Critical Skills I Have Developed To Succeed | Patience. Learning to say no. Creating systems to reduce workload and automate operations. Leadership skills are my main focus right now.
Lessons I Have Learnt | Don’t make big / long-term decisions under duress. Take on partners who compliment your skills, not because you need company. Take a minimum of 50% up-front – for everything. Don’t waste your time with meetings that could be emails. Everything is negotiable – people are more susceptible to your suggestions/ideas than you think.
